THE FUTURE IS MATERIALS

We at ilaivate believe that by innovating on our raw
materials we can create an eco-friendly world: , from the house we live in, to the clothes
we wear and to the food we eat.

It all started with a single thought, why use anything else when we can use nature’s produce to make the essential things that we need most? And if we can do it in a way that is plastic free, cruelty free and sustainable? Why do anything else? This became the inspiration that led to the birth of ilaivate.

The word ‘ilai’ (Tamil: இலை) means leaf symbolising nature’s bounty and ‘vate’ signifying to Innovate. Our mission is to redefine the future through design and make it into one that is plastic free, cruelty free and sustainable, and by starting from scratch and redesigning basic materials we aim to build a self-sufficient economy.

Our primary areas of focus include: Biofabrics, Biocomposites and Bioingredients serving sectors that include clothing, structural materials and meat alternatives. Our current effort is in our Biofabrics panel with Mycelium leather.

BIOFABRICATION

Our biofabrication panel aims to produce fabrics made from innovative biomaterials using advanced processes.

Why biofabrics?

To avoid the use of microplastics used in synthetics and support cruelty free sourcing. ‘Microplastics’ are miniscule pieces of plastic that come from breakdown of larger plastic objects or have been used directly in commercially available products. One of the biggest contributors of microplastics are the clothes we wear every day. Synthetic clothes release microplastics into the oceans after every wash and they are very hard to segregate and eliminate.

We are currently focusing on building a Mycelium leather product called MycoLea. We aim to manufacture in India and export it across Asia first and then across the globe.

BIOCOMPOSITES

We are working on delivering alternatives with similar or superior characteristics to conventionally produced materials used in the construction and packaging industry. Derived from mycelium ingredients and produced in our labs, our biocomposites will be available in sizes, quantity and regularity as required by the industry.

BIOINGREDIENTS

Bioactive ingredients

Leveraging on the biodiversity globally, ilaivate will supply vitamins, natural extracts, oils and dyes for use in the cosmetics, nutraceutical and skincare industries. We aim to source and produce locally and supply globally.

Plant based meat

To achieve a truly self sustaining economy, we believe in changing the way we eat. Hence, we will leverage our mycelial compounds to act as

structural material in plant based meat alternatives. Mycelium will help plant based products achieve a meat like consistency.
